[Gamechurch article] Alienation and Accessibility in The Lady


Playing MPR’s The Lady is a disturbing and deeply frustrating experience. Surreal and inexplicable, this horror game could more accurately be described as a simulation of how it feels to experience mental illness. With no guidance, the player is thrown headlong into a series of incomprehensibly counter-intuitive puzzles, overwhelmed by horrifyingly disconcerting imagery, a gnarling sense of claustrophobia, all-consuming despair, and stifling fear. As someone who has experienced mental illness, The Lady was a nightmarish experience for me, but  one from which I drew unexpected comfort.
